How I used motherhood to reinvent my career

Would you agree that everything changes when you become a mom? You wonder how you’re going to do what you’ve been doing, how are you going to take care of your baby, who’s going to watch them…

I remember reading baby magazines and thinking in panic how to figure all this out.

My friend Joann was expecting her first and her career was not baby friendly at all. She was constantly on the go, available on the phone 24/7, traveling almost every week for work. She had to figure it out and she did. She ended up moving and quitting her job and is now a full time stay at home mom.

My friend Amber is a lawyer and when she knew they wanted to start a family, she took a pay cut to work for an insurance company so she can have normal hours and benefits.

As for me, I was working in the spa industry and I knew that I could no longer do the hours, weekends, evening shifts and holidays.

In one of my pregnancy visits to the doctor, I was reading a baby magazine and I saw an ad for medical coding school that said make $40 000 and work from home.

That was the first time I started considering that possibility and I enrolled in online school soon after that.

I completed it and started a new career soon after, but then I found myself working 8-5 and leaving my then 2 years old son at daycare from the time they open till the time they close. Most days he was the last kid to be picked up from school.

Here’s what I didn’t like about having a job like this:

  1. Morning rush- getting everything ready, lunches packed for me and Jack, dropping him off and then rushing through traffic to make it on time to work. I was always stressed.
  2. Tired when getting home and living only for the weekend.
  3. Making it on time to pick up Jack from school. He was often the last kid to be picked up.
  4. Finding babysitters when needed.
  5. A difficult boss who basically gives you a hard time even when there is an emergency with your kid.

One day when driving home from work, I promised myself that I will change this situation and very soon a new opportunity opened up to me.

Now I run my own home-based business and I get to write my own schedule and work on my terms. I get to spend time with my kids which means the most to me.

I’m just so happy and grateful that now  I get to be home and my now 2 year old daughter has never seen an inside of a daycare.
